What Are CBD Capsules?

As is true with many consumer-driven markets today, the demand for convenient and easy access to CBD has led to the creation of CBD capsules and pills for on-the-go consumption. While there are many different ways to take CBD, these capsules allow consumers to take an exact dose of CBD at any time in a simple, odorless, and compact way.

CBD capsules are often made only with CBD oil and the ingredients necessary to make the capsule itself. These ingredients typically include gelatin, coconut oil, or MCT oil made from coconuts as MCT oil has been shown to assist with the digestive process of CBD. In addition to cannabidiol as the primary compound, many capsules on the market today are “full-spectrum” formulations, meaning they contain other beneficial cannabinoids from the cannabis or hemp plant. Compounds such as CBDA and THC have been shown to promote healthy sleep.

If you are looking to avoid CBD capsules that contain detectable levels of THC, perhaps for a current or prospective job opportunity, capsules containing CBD oil derived from hemp plants are the best option. Hemp plants contain high concentrations of CBD and typically 0.3% or less THC.

Uses and Benefits of CBD Capsules

All human bodies, along with many other mammalians, have an endocannabinoid system that receives signals from cannabinoids and produces its own endocannabinoids as well. In the early 1990’s, research revealed that the psychoactive effects of THC on the human brain were working on the endocannabinoid system. From a neural perspective, our endocannabinoid systems are known to regulate crucial functions, such as sleep, pain, and our immune system activation and response.

Despite their molecular structure being very similar, CBD, unlike THC, is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid – meaning it does not activate our brain’s reward system or trigger the production of pleasure chemicals. CBD doesn’t actually activate our body’s endocannabinoid system, but rather, it activates or inhibits compounds that are in the system already. These compounds host a myriad of benefits, many of which have not been researched extensively.

Although the field is constantly expanding, current research demonstrates that CBD oil (in any form) can be useful for people with:

Due to the nature of research, it is always recommended that individuals discuss using CBD with their doctors before beginning to use and products containing the compound. Most of the research in the field is correlational, not causational. This means that, while associations between CBD and the aforementioned health benefits have been observed, it has not been proven that CBD is the cause of those health benefits.

Side Effects of CBD

Albeit uncommon, some individuals report side effects when taking CBD. According to a 2017 update on the safety and side effects of CBD, the most commonly cited side effects are:

  • Tiredness
  • Diarrhea
  • Changes to appetite/weight

Relatively speaking, this is a very small side effect profile for any chemical that can assist with the aforementioned conditions.

Generally, CBD is very safe for humans, even in high doses. However, pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should not take CBD, as the evidence on safety is inconclusive for these people. CBD use among children is also lacking empirical research data, however the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a CBD medication, Epidiolex, for the treatment of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, two serious and rare kinds of epilepsy that appear in early childhood.
